Your posting has replicated my feelings o...Patriot

Your posting has replicated my feelings on the fishery that I have felt for a long time. They have had special status for so long that they forget how unique they really are compared to others outside the industry.

I don't pretend to know how to solve every problem of the fishery. What the govt, processers, and FFAW are trying which is to rationalize this industry can only be a good thing. Rationalization and consolidation in the farming industry out west happened years ago. It needs to happen here as well.

What appears to me to be a fundamental issue for many fishermen and processers is price certainty. This seems to be a recurring issue. They have a commodities exchange in Winnipeg for years which provides an opportunity for crop harvesters out west to manage their risk more effectively. Farmers/people can buy forward contracts or other various dervivative products on various commodities that can allow some price certainty and price protection.

I am wondering if there are products that can be developed that could be traded publically on that exchange (new name ICE) or dare I say set up one locally to provide these services. You would need govt support probably along with speculators to provide some liquidity to assist in its success. But it could help fishermen and processers going forward especially if they are all really business owners where risk management should be a critical concernAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
