School Yard Stevie's Ottawa Adventures

As much time as I spend exploring politics, and endeavoring to cut through the rhetoric and lies that abound there, today I find myself deferring to my better half with regard to Stephen Harper and in getting straight to the meat of matter.

Since Harper arrived on the federal scene I’ve been at a loss to figure the guy out. Not so with my wife. By no means a political animal, I suspect she most often listens to my ramblings out of a mixed sense of charity, duty and kindness, but she never the less she has the innate ability to size up any situation quickly, succinctly and accurately at a glance. Her take on Stephen Harper is no different.

When the topic of Canada’s self described “new” PM came up the other day, as it often does in my company, my guiding light simply looked at me and said, “You know he’s like a kid who never had any friends and wasn’t allowed to play with his toy soldiers growing up. He still doesn’t play well with others but now he’s got thousands of real soldiers to play with.”

Well said honey. You said a mouthful and you hit the nail on the head.

Since narrowly slipping into office, hot on the heels of the Liberal spending scandal 18 months ago, Stephen Harper has been the picture of an angry, frustrated unsocialized child who is getting far too much of his own way.

His handling of the Afghan mission bares witness to his lack of military and political understanding (read: never played with toy soldiers) and his willingness to tag along at George Bush’s coat tails speaks volumes about his hunger to be accepted and to find a buddy (read: never had any friends).

Harper’s apparent lack of socialization as a child seems to have followed him into his adult life and is quite obvious in his handling of any conflict situation he encounters. A clear example of this is his refusal to hold a first ministers conference since taking office and his propensity for quietly slipping in and out of places like Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland and Labrador without informing the leadership there. These acts show a clear preference to run and hide from any and all confrontation rather than facing it head on. Not a laudable leadership trait.

Stephen Harper’s lack of self confidence is clear in his dealings with his own MPs as well. He is afraid to let anyone in his party speak publicly to the media without first clearing it through his office. Some have speculated this shows a lack of confidence in his party but taken in conjunction with Harper’s other character traits it seems more likely he’s afraid of losing control of the situation and having everything he holds so dear slip away from him. Something a person who has never been accepted by others simply cannot face. In his handling of the media we once again see his “run and hide” response to pressure situations.

Like any outsider Harper will do or say almost anything to be accepted by others. This explains his willingness to make solid and clear election promises across the country and his propensity for breaking them as soon as an opportunity arises where he believes he can please an even larger number of people.

It’s a little sad in some ways. I can almost picture young Stevie Harper standing on the playground at school back in his day. A lone figure by the school steps, hands thrust in pockets, hoping someone, anyone, will ask him to join in the latest game of red rover or dodge ball, only to be forgotten, or more accurately ignored, once again.

I can picture him watching the other kids laughing happily while he instinctually feels the dirty little glances occasionally cast his way.

It must have been a cruel existence for little Stevie but somewhere along the line, as the mind of the future PM was maturing, a spark was given to his political life and with it the urge, no the need to gain total power over everyone who ever called him a name or laughed at him in his youth.

These days little Stevie is all grown up and has achieved his burning desire to rule all that he surveys. It seems however that his social skills, mentality and emotional development never progressed beyond that of the little schoolyard outcast. Whether this is a good thing or a bad thing history will be left to decide.

Some of the world’s most influential leaders, Napoleon and Hitler included, are believed to have been outcasts as children. They may not have been the most lovable of leaders in history but but I challenge anyone who says they never left their mark on the world. This is not to say Stephen Harper should be placed in the same category as those world leaders, in fact I'm sure there are many differences, not the least of which is his inability to gain the kind of wide spread public support they did. For that we should all thankful.

I have to hand it to my wife. She may not eat, sleep and breathe politics the way some members of our household do, (those who will remain nameless), but she sure knows how to call a spade a spade when she sees one.

The difference is that Williams has wide spread public support - similar to Napolean and Hitler as mentioned in the post. He's leaving a mark as well.

  5. Smallwood had "wide spread public support" too. 65.5% in 1949, 63.6% in 1951, 66.3% in 1956, 58% in 1959, 58.7% in 1962, 61.8% in 1966. Tobin had 55.1% in 1996 and 49.5% in 1999. Danny had 58.7% in 2003. What has political hero worship ever done for us?

  6. Patriot, I believe it's time to block anonymous commentators and also block twats such Ed Hollett and WJM. Their anonymous contributions to this forum are that much more annoying, and often disruptive simply for the sake of being disruptive (in WJM's case at least), than they were when they
    announced themselves.

    Example: grrrrrr - that Wince!!!

WJM is an effin twat. A total loser.

  7. stephen ,i woud have to agree with you 100%.The time has come to block those that do not agree with the views that are being exspressed here.

I myself ,enjoyed responding to many an article that Myles has posted but ,i feel that the constant misgivings of others ,and thier own agenda have twarted the effort of us who simply wish to hold a polite Conversation.

Some of your comments stephen in regards to the caplin fishery really Tempted me to respond ,but I feel that the arguement that some bring, simply does not make for good conversion, and until you can get control Myles of some of the federlist garbage that seems to be swamping your efforts for real dialouge then i feel that our efforts are nothing but wasted energy.

I could say something ,but then I would have to give my name address proffesion and physical proof of why i feel a certain way ,so i now simply refuse not to contribute. But,when others that come out and shout thier beliefs (Namely Federalists).Thier Ideology and political structure is accepted as gospel ,because they have no fear of R.C.M.P ,and other Government Agencys. To some this seems to be the Joke of the day, others ,like myself take precautions because we believe we have our right to privacey

I have and will try again to get a memebership to the NLDL, so i can be Identified and participate fully in a sensible conversation with-out having to worry.

I know that there are many a Newfoundland Nationalist out there on the web ,and I really wish that someone would take the lead and organise a forum for us.I myself would love to do something ,but I simply do not have the time.So for me,the only thing i can do is help here.

Dont get me wrong Myles ,you do a wonderful job ,doing what you do.I just wish we had a place that we could call our own and discuss our beliefs.

  8. I think that all opinions which do not agree with Myles or with Danny Williams should be banned in all forms. E.g. blogs, radio, newspapers, inter net, TV, magazines. Only opinions or facts which agree with Danny Williams i.e. pro-Newfoundland should be permitted.

  11. Actually, I think that everyone who wears glasses should be rounded up and sent to a labour camp. That will solve at least half of the problem. Nobody should ever diagree with Danny. It should be illegal like Bill Rowe says.

I also agree with the people who post here saying we should have a referendum. It is time we sent people like WJM away for good.

I think it's a bad idea to block those with different views. I do think it's a good idea to block cunts like WJM who have no goodwill, aren't interested in having a conversation, butcher what other people say and are simply too arrogant to be amiable.

If only WJM hadn't been "loved" so badly by his dad perhaps we wouldn't have to deal with this shit.

You'd lose hands down! Not saying it's a bad idea to ask the question, but be prepared to be on the wrong side of a landslide victory.

You want a referendum, plan for one a generation from now and start indoctrinating... er, I mean, educating our young about the evils of Confederation and the merits of choosing our own destiny.

Then, and only then, would a referendum stand a chance of winning.

You can't gauge public opinion on the basis of people who call the open line shows around here. This people, although vocal, are a minority.

PS - Do not block my anonymous "first poster" nemesis!

Just ask yourself... What would Hugo do?

Only then will you win over the hearts and minds of people.

  16. I agree with myself.

I don't want to block comments from people who don't agree with what I say says but people who disagree should be blocked.

People who use foul language should be blocked too.

    Oh no.

    That would block me.

    Block everybody.

  17. Very true Wince, I think if a referendum was held anytime in the near future the people hoping for independence would lose. We definitely need to start changing peoples minds. But it would have to be done over time, like you said maybe 10 years would do it. We need to start with our symbols, like the pink white and green. That candy wrapper, poor excuse for a flag that we now fly has to go. People have to start thinking that they need separation. Boneheads like Harper can do nothing but help our cause. He's done a great deal to turn NL's away from Canada. But there's still much work to be done.

  18. If the current flag is a candy wrapper, that must make the PWG the candy. It looks like one of the old-fashioned "all sorts" from Nan's house. What a friggin color for a flag, pink.

  19. Yeah, the PWG is pretty sweet ain't it?

Pink the Rose of England shows, BABY!

The green St. Patrick's emblem bright
While in between, the spotless sheen

It will be interesting when the revolution comes.

  21. I think your betteer half summed it up quite well.

But unfortunately it isn't Steve who is the problem nor was it Trudeau, Cretien, or Mulroney. They are just playing and working within a systemically flawed system. Read Tommy Douglas's MouseLand. Consider that there isn't any equality between the members of this so called federation anywhere in anyway shape or form.

Why should we have to leave this federation? What needs to be done is discredit the systemically flawed system and expose it to the masses for what it really is "Democratic Imperialism".

How do you do this you might ask. Well think of the Bloc Quebecois, now imagine 9 Bloc style parties in the HOC and you have exposed the system for what it is and will bring about change.

Vote NLfirst in the next federal election. You the electorate are responsible for sending national party members Red Cat Blue Cat to Ottawa to represent you. Unfortunately for you the members you are electing have to toe the party line which is drawn by ON/QU, and these same members being a part of a national party have to do what's in the best interest of the majority of canadians by default ON/QU where 66% of the population live and now with Stevie in charge and being backed by big oil and Big ASS those three add up to 73%.

You can talk all you want about getting out or changing the system but it has to done from within unless you want to pull an FLQ and we saw how canada dealth with that.

?? Does anyone else have to push publish comment twice in order to get it to work???

    Ha ha ha!

    Oh, you are being serious.

Those clowns are a joke. It's just as well you burn your ballot than vote for that pathetic lot. They are promising a new look to their website. At the rate they updated it in the past, we might see a change in 4 years! And they say they are registering federally. Good luck with that. If they want people to become members and back then financially, they had better start establishing some sort of track record because right now they don't have one.

The best thing that could happen to the NLFirst Party is for the current leadership to be thrown out.
