Stephen Harper - Voted Canada's #1 Dysfunctional Dad

As Canadians we all live in a strong federation of provinces. We are all a part of a proud and historic alliance. We are a union of diverse jurisdictions which equal far more than the sum of our individual parts. A family, if you will, of brothers and sisters, all equally loved and nurtured by a parental and protecting Ottawa.

Excuse me while I puke!

That may have been the dream a long time ago but these days it certainly isn’t the reality at 666 Canuck Lane.

Today we all ramble aimlessly around a house divided. It's like we're the kids of divorced parents and we got stuck living with the unfit one.

We're all living with a parent who figures its just fine that the two biggest kids in the family have everything they want, even if it means snatching it out of the hands of their smaller siblings. Going to Dad to complain gets us nowhere. Hell it might even mean a good hard slap across the face. In the end the little ones have no other recourse but to scream in vain hoping someone, anyone, will listen. They never do.

The entire Country as it exists today is nothing more than the ultimate dysfunctional family and, other than those who always end up holding the short end of the stick, nobody gives a rat’s ass!

These days it’s common for Dad to break open little Junior’s piggy bank, give the cash to his big brother for beer and hookers and not even tell the poor little guy until the money’s all spent and big brother is staggering around the house beating up the furniture and slapping the other kids around. Sound familiar anyone?

It’s also acceptable for half the brothers and sisters in the family to be as pissed as hell at what Dad’s doing. It’s OK as long as it’s the right half that is.

Hell, our latest father figure has been in charge for well over a year now and not once has he called all the kids into a room for a serious chat. Ever hear of a First Minister’s Conference Dad? With everyone at each other’s throats these days I think we could use one right about now don’t you?

No, probably not. I guess Dad figures if he just ignores the problem long enough it’ll go away. Good strategy Dad. You may even be right because if things don’t get any better around this bloody house sometime soon a lot of the kids might just decide to pack their bags and get the hell out.

news update:

Premier Danny Williams has upped the anti in his battle with Ottawa. He's calling for the immediate resignation of Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

Williams says the federal government has deliberately released inaccurate and misleading information, which was provided to economist Wade Locke for his initial analysis of equalization.

Premier Williams says this now goes beyond a broken federal promise.

Nova Scotia economist now says new equalization formula and cap will cost that province about $1 billion.

I guess another piggy bank just got robbed and either big brother Ont or Que will be partying tonight before finding some new way to slap us around.

Welcome to Canuck Lane.

Take your idiot selves out of this country if you don't like it. No one will care.

Every other day some politician in NL is calling for someone to resign, someone to apologize, someone to take responsiblit.
SHUT UP!

You are like garden slugs stuck to our shoe.....big, fat, (I've seen your beer guts)lazy morons who couldn't govern themselves out of a paper bag.

See what I mean about canada. Now that the rest of the world is hearing about how Canada treats thier own ,they feel that Newfoundlander's and Labradorians are as they describe.
For the first time in 58 years we stand-up to what is being done to our home's and our Familys .And instead of the rest of the country saying ,(as they did to Quebec)"Hey whats going on to create this Mood in that Province" ,they encourage us to leave.
Well this is one Newfoundlander that agrees with you Anon of April 18, 2007 4:36 PM.I totally agree with you .Why are we still here i don't know .I agree that the time for talk has come and gone.we should leave as we came ,with a majority of 50% ,not what the Nazi's in Ottawa are saying with thier beloved "Prison Gag"called the Clarity Act.
As for being seen as a "Joke" thats OK .I would rather be seen as a Joke then ,a Liar. You guys can have that T-Shirt,and by the looks of it ,one size "FITS" all.

I WANT TO SAY THIS TO WHAT YOU SAID, WE DAMN WELL HAVE TO COMPLAIN FROM THIS DAY FORWARD. FOR 58 YEARS WE DIDN'T COMPLAIN AND WE LOST SO MANY OF OUR WONDERFUL RESOURCES AND WE HAVE BEEN CHEATED BLIND. ARE YOU AWARE OF THE FALSE NUMBERS THE FEDERAL FINANCE DEPARTMENT PROVIDED AN INDEPENDENT ACCOUNT FROM THIS PROVINCE ON THE EQUILIZATION PRORAM? WHEN THE ACCOUNTANT RECEIVED THE REAL NUMBERS WITH A LOT OF TROUBLE IN OBTAINING THEM FROM THE FEDS, IT SHOWED THAT THE PROVINCE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR STANDS TO LOSE $11 BILLION DOLLARS. THAT MONEY IS NOW DESTINED FOR ONTARIO AND QUEBEC. MONIES THAT SHOULD BE PAID TO US AS A RESULT OF HAVING ALL OF THOSE NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCES GOING OUT OF HERE FOR SOME OTHER PROVINCE'S DEVELOPMENT.

Isn't it sickening to see how some people like the Anon of April 18, 2007 2:04 PM is very upset that Newfoundlaners and Labradorians have finally come to their senses and are lobbying for equality within the corrupt Federation of Canada?

The Anon whom I mentioned above who posted today at 2:04 PM keeps asking the same question over and over, and of course, I cannot resist giving him the same answer, but he completely refuses because that Anon has enjoyed the 'good life' for soooo long on Newfoundland and Labrador's resources, the Anon now still wants to keep the STATUS QUO being paid for by our resources with us receiving the crumbs. It is not going to continue to happen. I can't tell you when it will stop, but stop it must. Somebody in Ottawa, some day, will have to put an end to the corruption that exists as it pertains to what the province IS NOT RECEIVING as a fair share of the Ottawa largesse. Especially the largesse that equates to what we should be getting from this province's resources.

Unfortunately for you Anon we are not going to allow it to happen. Newfoundlanders and Labradorians want true equality with the rest of Canada. We do not want fiscal equality without all the other goodies that the rest of the provinces enjoy. We are very close to the status quo of Ottawa, but we have very few of the amenities that Ontario and the rest of the provinces enjoy.

Anonymous said...

The equalization compensation each province receives is determined by its fiscal capacity - its ability to tax. This may be a convenient formula, but is not an accurate measure of the relative economic health of provinces. Two could have the same fiscal capacity but much different levels of employment, debt, cost of providing services, etc.

Newfoundland and Labrador is on the verge of reaching Ontario’s fiscal capacity, but our economy remains far weaker. And taxing ability based on liquidating finite non-renewable resources is different from that based on renewable activities which continue producing indefinitely.

Ontario has not received equalization because it enjoys so many other benefits provided by Ottawa.

Anonymous said...

And therein lies the problem.......Newfoundlanders have always regarded governments (provincial or federal) as "parents" and themselves as children needing taking care of.

Maybe it's time to regard governement for what it is:

Elected officials/public servants tryin to run the country.

It's not just all about NL.

Take a wider view.

Anonymous said...

O.K. Then let us regard it as Politicians running a province. If that's the case our politicians are not looking after our province's needs but the needs of the country. Just consider what the 3 Conservative politicians have done in Ottawa. They toed the line for what Ottawa want and as a result we are losing $11 billion dollars of equilzation as a result of what was promised by this present government and they changed the terms of a 1985 contract that was drawn up under another Government for this province.

No matter if you call us a province or a child, we are losing greatly under this country called Canada.

I can't imagine another Government going back and making changes to an Accord that was drawn up for us that would set up back to desperately! It would never happen to Ontario, Quebec or any other province in Canada.

All I can say to you Anon of April 19, 2007 8:01 AM is THAT YOU TAKE A WIDER VIEW. IF YOU ARE SO RIGHTEOUS, MAYBE YOU CAN FIX IT!

THE PROVINCE OF NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR IS SCREEEEEEEWED IN THIS LOPSIDED NATION CALLED CANADA, NO MATTER WHETHER YOU CALL US A CHILD OR A PROVINCE!

Anonymous said...

The Federal Government in the change it made to equilization formula as it relates to the province of Newfoundland and Labrador just screwed the province of Newfoundland and Labrador out of $11 Billion dollars.

11 billion dollars contain 11 x 1000 million dollars, so there this province is losing $11,000 million dollars.

With $11,000 million dollars the Feds could come to this province 11,000 times and hand out $1 million each time. Now what an economy we would have.

SO LET US GET IT STRAIGHT THE FEDS ARE TAKING AWAY FROM THIS PROVINCE over the next 13 years $11,000 Millions (11 Thousand Million.

THAT IS THE EQUIVALENT OF THE FEDS COMING TO THE PROVINCE 11,000 TIMES AND HANDING OUT $1 MILLION EACH TIME.

THE QUESTION IS WOULD ONTARIO, QUEBEC OR ANY OF THE OTHER PROVINCES ALLOW THIS TO HAPPEN?

Anonymous said...

Premier Williams put in an appearance on VOCM Nightline last evening. In his discussion with Host Linda Swain he was not shy about saying what was on his mind, although he stopped just short of using the word "separation".

When the host noted that the relationship between the province and Ottawa was at an all time low and asked where we go from here he replied, "A lot lower".

He went on to say that, "We are a proud nation down here and we got along for a long time before we joined Canada and we will get along now with or without their help."

When asked about some projects that we need the fed for he replied, "We have a promise from this government to back a loan guarantee for Lower Churchill development for example but we know what their promises are like so I don't believe for a minute we're going to get that. Regardless, if they think we will give Quebec or someone else another sweet deal so we can get that guarantee they better think again."

He also said, "We've come to the conclusion in this province that if we want to get anything done we have to do it ourselves and we will, with or without them."

He clearly didn't use the word separation but you could hear in the comments a very clear message being sent to Ottawa.

Anonymous said...

Premier Wiliams' appearance on Linda's Swain's Night Line to talk to the people was much anticipated by everyone. And I must say that I listened to his talk to the people intently and the gentleman said everything that we wanted to hear; and we know what he said is what every person from this province believes. That man makes us feel good. I hope he holds his ground and gets what this province deserves.

I, for one, do not want to separate from Canada, but if we cannot get our fair from Ottawa to create economies to run this province, well then we will have to look at different methods.

I have been all throughout the length and breadth of Canada, and from my observance, beer bellies are far too prevalent everywhere in Canada. No one province has the monopoly on that one.

Both sides please let us stop the childish antics! This blog should only deal with the meat and potato issues. As it exists in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, we certainly have a lot of these issues to deal with as a result of being a province of Canada and being treated inequitable.

Yes, let us stop the childish antics and tackle the problems!

Patriot ,

I would like to say thank-you for the report that came from Memorial University.

The attuide that has been shown to me by canadains living in Ontario is that Premeir Williams has been ,or is to blame for the lack of industry wanting to come to Newfoundland and Labrador.
Since this budget has come out ,and the newspaper adds have been put out by both partys involved,a few people that I have had a chance to discuss the issuse's with "NOW" see why there is such anger and resentment towards canada by Newfoundland and Labrador. And ,why we have a separtion movement coming from apart of the country ,that awhile back was so proud of it's place in Canada.
Most people in canada do not even relise that the dialiect that I have come's from there own country ,so I don't expect them to understand our issus's,But when I do show them ,thru the CBC,what has transpired since we joined canada they fully understand why we want to leave.

And ,with this point being made they also understand why self-determination "CANNOT" be stopped.Be it Quebec,Alberta ,or Newfoundland and Labrador. The time has come to say Good-Bye.

Official Press Release from the Provincial Finance Minster on April 13:

Finance
April 13, 2007
Federal Government Misled Province on Impact of New Equalization Program

The Honourable Tom Marshall, Minister of Finance and President of Treasury Board, today confirmed that the federal government has misled the Provincial Government and the people of Newfoundland and Labrador regarding the true implications of the new equalization program as outlined in its 2007 Budget. According to figures released by Memorial University economist Dr. Wade Locke, the net impact of these changes is that the new equalization program will provide the province with $1 billion less than the existing equalization program over a 13-year period. It is also $11 billion short of what the Prime Minister promised the province in writing over that same 13-year time frame.

“We identified this problem more than a week ago and immediately wrote the federal government seeking clarification,” Minister Marshall said. “We have yet to hear back from them. The fact that they don’t bother to respond to us, but manage to find the time to speak with and offer clarification to independent economists, is insulting to the elected government and people of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Government of Canada has an obligation to explain themselves. The federal budget legislation contradicts everything we have been told by Ottawa.”

The minister said it is increasingly clear that the cost of the Prime Minister’s broken promise is significant. “Dr. Locke’s numbers suggest that the shortfall from the Prime Minister’s commitment is now $11 billion. What’s more, it appears to be more financially advantageous for the province to opt to stay with the existing equalization program as it provides approximately $1 billion more than the new equalization program.

“These numbers contradict everything the federal government and Fisheries and Oceans Minister Loyola Hearn, in particular, have said since budget day. Not only does this new equalization formula provide less money to Newfoundland and Labrador than what we are receiving today, it appears to make it extremely difficult to qualify for the second eight-year term of the Atlantic Accord 2005. It is as if the federal government is trying to strip us of the benefits of the Atlantic Accord in its new equalization program,” the minister said.

“Despite assurances from the Federal Minister of Finance that the accords would be protected, fundamental amendments to the legislation implementing the 2005 Atlantic Accord agreement have been proposed without any consultation with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. These amendments can be found in the ‘consequential amendments’ sections of the 2007 Federal Budget Implementation Act. Consequential amendments are normally reserved for housekeeping items to fix technical issues. It is not a place to shroud fundamental changes of this magnitude,” continued Minister Marshall.

Minister Marshall said the federal government has completely neglected to provide full disclosure of the true facts surrounding its equalization program and the Atlantic Accord 2005.

“We are calling on the federal government to provide immediate clarification,” said Minister Marshall. "We simply will not accept half answers, partial information and shifting ground rules. What federal officials told our officials on Budget day is now completely contrary to what they are saying to independent economists. The people of Newfoundland and Labrador deserve better than this, and it is time for the federal government to be straight forward and forthright with the people of the province and indeed the country.”

An article in Macleans magazine states that people in Newfoundland
" have the highest incidences of alcohol-related issues, poorest eating habits(and subsequent health problems as a result) and have the most smokers per capita in all of Canada"

They are without question the unhealthiest people in the country and the largest drain on the healthcare system.

Cancer and heart disease are rampant as is obesity and diabetes.

Canda Food Guide - Guess who lobbied for inclusion in the last update of that Guide? The Soft Drink Companies. Who do we blame?

Anonymous said...

It is not only the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, but the the other provinces as well which are well up there in the same distinctions. I read an article in MacLeans that states that one province has the highest consumption of rum and whiskey, another has the highest consumption of wine, while others have the highest consumption of beer. Who eats all the junk food produced in Canada? While the people of Newfoundland and Labrador, eat their fair share, I am sure they don't eat all of it? According to the advertisements done on TV which must cost millions of dollars to run annually? The province of Newfoundland and Labrador consist of 500,000 people, and if the companies depended on that number to be their total consumers, they wouldn't be able to afford to run one day's ads, that is if it were up to Newfoundland and Labrador to consume enough food to pay for the Ads. So therefore, there must be an equivalent share of junk food consumed in the other provinces of Canada as well. But nevertheless, we all need to be reminded that we eat more than our fair share of foods with useless calories and fat content. I try to monitor what I eat. And I try to avoid the "all you can eat food bars" like the plague.

My question is who consumes all the Viagra, Cialist and other sexual stimulants? Such drugs must cause other problems to arise in the people who consume them? Wouldn't that also add to the Canadian Medicare costs?

For the greatest part of 58 years I was HAPPY under Canada, or I thought I was HAPPY. I thought it was a GIVE and TAKE situation, until I saw how bad the TAKE was on OTTAWA's and the REST of CANADA's part. But when I became fully apprised of the bad deal we got in Canada as it came into focus, I became very DISENCHANTED and now I am good an ANGRY.

Ottawa not only didn't see that our resources were shared with us, the owner, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Ottawa allowed the exploitment of our resources to the hilt and left nothing for us, the owner of the resources, while the other provinces and Ottawa prospered on our resources.

Ottawa didn't see to it that it spread the TRANSFER PAYMENTS, RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT monies, and FEDERAL REGIONAL OFFICES to the furthest Eastern reaches of its territory, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, like it did to the West. Those monies doled out by Ottawa stopped at Nova Scotia to the East. As a result of not having the nutrients bleed out into the far reaches of its Eastern Periphery, it left a large land mass which makes up the complete Eastern Flank of Canada, the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador, dying for the lack of nutrients.

Yes, I am damn ANGRY, and I do not know what to do with my ANGER because Ottawa practices the Spin Cycle to extract itself from every situation it encounters, and because the LOUTS we have elected to look after this province FEDERALLY have toed the Party Line for Ottawa and are willing to do so until every bit of this province's life's blood is drained out of its body.

TOO BAD THAT OTTAWA HAS A PRACTICE OF DOLING OUT PATRONAGE POSITIONS AND OTHER PLUMS, WHICH ALLOW POLITICIANS TO TOE THE PARTY LINE FOR THEIR MASTER AND NOT FOR THEIR ELECTORATE. SO IF THE POLITICIN DOESN'T GET ELECTED, THEY ARE TOLD "DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY" YOU WILL NOT BE DISADVANTAED, YOU WILL BE TAKEN CARE OF. SO OUR POLITICIANS ARE LIVING IN AN IDEAL WORLD WITH A CADILLAC INSURANCE POLICY.

THE POLITICAL SYSTEM PRACTICED BY OTTAWA IS A CORRUPT SYSTEM. THERE IS NO WAY POSSIBLE TO MOVE FORWARD FOR A PROVINCE LIKE NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR, WITH SO MANY RESOURCES, BUT ONLY 2.2 PER CENT OF THE POLITICAL REPRESENTATION IN THE HOUSE OF COMMONS IN OTTAWA. HOW DOES A PROVINCE WITH SUCH A DISPROPORTINATE SAY EVER GET AHEAD?

You crazy Anon of April 23, 2007 9:01 AM

If you wanted to use your mind and brush up on the facts you would see who has created the problems in Newfoundland and Labrador. But obviously, you are too lazy to do so or you don't want to know the facts at all. All you contribute to this blog is complaints on the fact that you see us trying to do something positive, which in your mind is negative. Where is that getting the situation, when we are trying to put the facts across to Canadians, that is, if they will listen? But I doubt that they will, since they want the resources from this province to keep their own economies thriving. They have been nourishing themselves of the teats of Newfoundland and Labrador for 58 years now.

And no doubt the other 9 provinces had their voices heard and a say into what the Terms of Union that Ottawa drew up for the province of Newfoundland and Labrador would allow. That, no doubt, has contributed to the mess this province has had to endure without the use of our resources and as a result not being able to create economies here. We were taken to the cleaners. As we are seeing now, it impossible to wean them of our teats? How do we do it? Especially when 3 of our 7 seats are filled by ruling party politicians, who are only too willing to slaughter us by toeing the line for Ottawa and the other provinces of Canada.

We were screwed right, left and centre by the Federal Government right from the onset, and there is no other way of putting it, plus there is no way of getting out of it with our pitiful share of representation in the House of Commons.

It is all there to be seen if you were not as indolent as you appear to be Anon. But you do not want to get up off your backside and research the facts and become knowledgable, you just want to complain and use those childish words like Boo-hoo, like you have been doing for eons.

Down-trodden victims, like us, have no way of getting out of a situation that they are in. If you have followed the news over the past 2 months, you can plainly see that the Atlantic Accord that was drawn up for Newfoundland and Labrador in 1985 got changed without us being apprised of the changes. Also a set of figures was given to an independent accountant for the Equilization Formula, when he crunched them they favoured the Federal Government, but not the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Federal Government allowed those figures that made them look good to be in the Canadian Public News Media for a week, then they apprised the Accountant that they were wrong since they had made new changes. This accountant apparently presented his numbers to the Feds for their approval, they even gave him the approval and allowed him to present the wrong numbers. How much worse can it get? He was given another set of figures and they were crunched and show that the province of Newfoundland and Labrador was getting $11 Billion dollars less over 13 years than it was supposed to get. All because the Feds changed what we already had negotiated with them in 1985 and after. How can the Premier of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador deal with deceit like that? It is plain to see that we have no control when such back door changes can happen without our knowledge. And once we have the knowledge how can we change it, when it is up against 97.8 per cent of the seats in the House of Commons. As you know we only have 2.2 per cent of those seats, that equates to 7 seats out of 308 seats, and 3 of those 7 side with the Feds, since they are Conservative and they have to or they are out the door with none of the plums they will get if they stay and toe the line for Ottawa. They are okay, even if they do not get elected the next time around, but they do have to stay and toe the Ottawa line. Isn't that sick that we have to send politicians to Ottawa to do such a corrupt thing? For toeing the party line , the Feds have created remedies, guess what the remedies are referred to? They are referred to as plum positions. An insurance policy that gives obedient politicians 100 per cent protection. That is Corruption at its worse, isn't it?

If you are so bloody smart Anon , show me your smarts and tell me EXACTLY WHAT I HAVE TO DO TO CHANGE THINGS TO MAKE IT BETTER FOR ME AND MY COLLEAGUES IN THIS PROVINCE, without accusing me randomly that all I want to do is not take responsility for something, that I have no control over, but instead archaic rules which have been imposed upon me and the rest of my fellow Newfoundlanders and Labradorians by Ottawa and the other 301 seats in the House of Commons.

Don't post with the Boo-hoos and non-essential words that mean nothing, but make you look like a stunned person. Post something meaningful, even if you don't agree. And I want an answer with the solution or at least alternative! Or please stop the boo-hooing.

Professor Temelini of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador said in the Independent Newspaper this week, that we were a country before we joined Canada, unlike the other 8 provinces. He also said we have the strategic location and the resources; and we could be as well off as any of the other Island Nations in the North Atlantic are, such as Iceland, Greenland and Ireland, which are all doing very well under the umbrella of the European Union.
